Women's Health Q & A

What is included in women’s health care?

Women’s health services provided at Longoria OBGYN are diverse and comprehensive. Dr. Longoria addresses issues such as:

  • Yearly wellness exams
  • Health screenings, such as Pap smears
  • STD screenings, for conditions such as chlamydia and herpes
  • Endometriosis evaluation and treatment
  • Vaginitis, yeast infections, and urinary tract infection detection and treatment
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease diagnosis and care
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome management
  • Essure removals

He’s an accomplished gynecological surgeon providing minimally invasive surgery for conditions such as uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts.

What does routine women’s health care entail?

Annual exams are an important part of your gynecological and overall health. At these visits, Dr. Longoria provides a comprehensive exam with an emphasis on your reproductive health, pelvic organs, and breast health. Annual women’s health exams should begin in adolescence and continue past menopause.

Well-woman exams include a pelvic exam (for those 21 and older), a clinical breast exam, and any necessary screening tests. This is a good time to discuss concerns you may have about symptoms or your general health.

Dr. Longoria recommends a yearly mammogram beginning at age 40. If you have a high risk of breast cancer of a family or personal history of the disease, you may need earlier or more frequent screenings.

What birth control options are available?

Dr. Longoria offers multiple birth control options and helps determine which one is best for you. He’ll take into account your schedule, sexual activity, family goals, and health when settling on a method. Options include hormonal contraception, intrauterine devices (IUDs), and implants (such as Nexplanon®) Permanent birth control with tubal ligation is also available if you’re certain you don’t want any future pregnancies.

What screening tests are involved in women’s health care?

Some screening tests offered at Longoria OBGYN are routine, such as Pap smears to check for abnormal cells in your cervix that suggest you may develop cervical cancer. HPV, or human papillomavirus, tests check for this common sexually transmitted disease, some of which put you at risk for cancer.

If you have concerns about other STDs, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, request testing as it’s not a regular part of a routine exam. Symptoms such as irregular bleeding, pain during intercourse, or pelvic pain may indicate fibroids, endometriosis, or ovarian cysts, which require ultrasounds and sometimes minimally invasive diagnostic laparoscopy for confirmation.

Women who are struggling with urinary incontinence benefit from urodynamics testing to find the root cause and the best treatment.
